The 30+ knots record-breaking motoryacht, Special One, Is making her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024

In 2021 and again in 2024, Royal Huisman delivered groundbreaking aluminum motoryachts that other builders said could not be built. That kind of challenge has always been in the shipyard’s wheelhouse. Phi was engineered and delivered in 2021. Measuring a 58.5m / 192ft overall, she is the world’s longest motoryacht below 500GT, based on current classification rules. The spectacular Special One, a record-breaking 52m / 171ft sportfish yacht making her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, is the largest of its kind in the world and capable of 30+ knots. The individual construction challenges of both of these recent Royal Huisman projects were well outside the comfort zone of many other yards.

Rather than try to persuade the owners of Phi and Special One to scale back on their demands, Royal Huisman worked closely with the designers and architects, its own engineering team ensuring that every aspect of the yacht met their exact specifications and class requirements.

Phi is a high-spec, custom tri-deck motoryacht with the distinction of being the longest yacht to measure below 500 GT. Obviously the design enabling this is intricate. Owner’s representative Guy Booth said, “We spoke with most of the pedigree shipyards. We were frustrated to be told, ‘You can’t do that,’ and so the idea of [talking to] a sailboat builder came up. The response we got from Royal Huisman the very first day was, ‘We’ve never done something like this before. But we are absolutely certain that we can.’”

Special One, the world’s largest sportfishing yacht, was designed inside and out including naval architecture by Vripack Yacht Design. She features six decks finished to the highest standard of luxury, yet the performance and equipment of a top tournament sportsfisherman – on steroids. “If someone had told us in five years there will be a 52m sportfisherman that goes 30-plus knots, our feedback would be, ‘Impossible’,” said Bart Bouwhuis of Vripack Yacht Design. “But it is possible, in fact she goes from 0 to 30 knots in 46 seconds. Several other shipyards could not have built this yacht because it’s extremely complex from a technological point of view, extremely dense, and with a very strict weight target. Also, a sailboat builder understands how to build in tight spaces. A sportfish yacht has pronounced hull shapes in the forward section, not unlike a sailing yacht.“

ABOUT  THE YACHTS

Phi is a low-profile superyacht conceptualized by Cor D. Rover who also supplied her sensuous exterior design based on the Golden Ratio, and interior layout. The naval architecture is by Van Oossanen and the interior is by Lawson Robb. The yacht hits a top speed of more than 22 knots with modest power thanks to a Fast Displacement hull shape that is 30 percent more efficient than a traditional 500 GT motoryacht, bringing a significant reduction in greenhouse gasses. Weight control was key to her success. From superstructure design that was incredibly complex to build, to her use of glass and deep, thought-provoking and still largely secret interior, the yacht is beyond unique. “The more we saw Phi come alive, the more I was convinced that only a sailboat builder has the know-how and ambition to execute miracles on a square inch. Royal Huisman is the epitome of this watchmaker’s skill,” said Cor D. Rover.

Special One is the world’s largest sportfishing yacht. Her specifications required her to be able to reach the fishing grounds at 30 knots – a speed she comfortably exceeds — and be able to turn and back down on her catch with the same agility as a vessel half her size. She has full guest accommodation for ten guests and nine crew, six outdoor social areas including an outdoor cinema with DJ platform on the bow, a sound system of the highest specification, gyro stabilization, a retractable commercial offshore 3D fish finder, and the world’s first pneumatic elevator installed on a yacht. Even more remarkable, she, too, is under 500GT. The entire project was innovative,” said owner’s representative Lydia Pascarelli. “Before approaching Royal Huisman, we had another yard say, ‘You can’t do it. Sorry, it’s crazy’ They wouldn’t take it on unless they could reengineer.”

“We had to have a weight budget [to meet the required speed]. Ultimately it is a combination of things: an extremely detailed weight calculation and assessment, a smart design, and foremost, a builder who understands weight and center of gravity, and who can build to weight. If the builder is not able to manage weight, to follow weight, to understand weight; It’s all, it’s all for nothing…” said the yacht’s designer, Bart Bouwhuis. “In fact, that was the turning point for choosing Royal Huisman, a sailboat builder. The research that was done in choosing the yard was extremely extensive,” said Lydia Pascarelli.
